Over the past six months, the most unsettling development has not been that students are using generative AI more often. It is that colleges and universities are moving AI into admissions, curriculum, student support, and enterprise contracts faster than they are building the governance structures needed to protect learning, privacy, and academic judgment.
In that sense, the current higher education story is not simply about innovation. It is about whether institutions will allow the logic of platform adoption to outrun the educational values they claim to defend.
The latest reporting suggests that the sector has entered a new phase in which AI is being normalized at the institutional level. In The Wall Street Journal’s report, “Anthropic Takes Big Step in AI Race to Reshape College Coding Courses,” the company’s partnership with community and state colleges was framed not as a limited pilot but as a large-scale curricular intervention that could reshape what students learn and how workforce preparation is defined. That matters because once AI becomes embedded in course design and labor-market messaging, it stops being a classroom tool and starts becoming an organizing logic for the institution itself.
At roughly the same time, admissions offices were crossing another line. In the Associated Press article “Colleges are using AI tools to analyze admissions essays, applications,” institutions described using AI to screen and evaluate applications, with Virginia Tech preparing an AI-powered essay reader to accelerate decision-making and reduce processing time. Colleges have long warned applicants not to outsource their voices to chatbots, yet some of those same institutions are now comfortable introducing AI into the reading process. That contradiction is not just awkward. It raises a deeper question about whether higher education is drifting toward a model in which authenticity is demanded from students while automation is embraced by institutions.
The student side of this story is equally sobering. The 2026HEPI Student Generative AI Surveyreported that 95 percent of students use AI in at least one way and 94 percent use generative AI to help with assessed work, while institutional encouragement and support still lag well behind actual student behavior. This is a dangerous mismatch. When AI use becomes nearly universal before policy becomes coherent, universities do not get ethical adoption; they get shadow adoption, inconsistency, and a widening gap between formal rules and lived practice.
Faculty are warning that the academic consequences are already visible. A February 2026College Boardbrief reported that 74 percent of faculty say students are using AI to write essays or papers, 67 percent say students use it to paraphrase or rewrite content, and more than 84 percent believe AI is reducing critical thinking, originality, and deep engagement with course material. Those figures should alarm anyone who still treats the issue as a temporary adjustment problem. If the central intellectual tasks of higher education are reading carefully, writing originally, and thinking through complexity, then the erosion of those habits is not a side effect. It is the crisis.
That concern is now turning into open resistance. Inside Higher Ed reported in “Writing Faculty Push for the Right to Refuse AI” that the Conference on College Composition and Communication passed a resolution affirming the rights of students and faculty to refuse generative AI in the writing classroom, while critics cited concerns about privacy, labor, environmental cost, and the narrowing of writing instruction into workforce training. This response is significant because it moves the debate beyond plagiarism detection and into academic freedom. Faculty are no longer asking only how to manage AI; they are also asking who gets to decide whether AI belongs in particular pedagogical spaces at all.
The University of Colorado system has now become a warning sign for the rest of the sector. Recent reporting fromAxiosnoted that CU delayed student access to ChatGPT until the fall after faculty concerns emerged around privacy, bias, misinformation, mental health, and the broader classroom implications of the university’s OpenAI agreement. What makes this episode so important is not merely the delay. It is that governance surfaced after the deal had already been made public, suggesting that shared deliberation is still too often trailing procurement rather than guiding it.
This is why the most important higher education AI question in 2026 is no longer whether campuses should adopt the technology. That question has already been answered in practice, because the adoption is happening. The real question is whether universities can build rules, norms, and human-centered safeguards quickly enough to prevent AI from hollowing out the very things that make higher education worth defending. The threat is not only dishonest student writing, although that remains serious. The larger danger is institutional dependence on systems that promise efficiency while quietly redefining teaching, authorship, evaluation, and even the meaning of academic merit.
